2027: NNPP to Adopt Frontline Presidential Candidate – Aniebonam

The Founder of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam, has disclosed that the party will soon announce a frontline presidential candidate it intends to adopt for the 2027 general election.

Aniebonam made this known in a statement on Tuesday, explaining that prolonged litigation over the party’s leadership affected its ability to select a presidential candidate capable of competing with leading candidates from other political parties.

He said although the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recognised the NNPP led by Dr Agbo Major as its National Chairman, the time available to select a suitable presidential candidate was limited.

According to him, the party initially had a placeholder candidate while searching for a credible presidential candidate with the character and capacity to lead Nigeria.

“The NNPP is firm with its manifesto and requirements for a presidential candidate. We made a mistake with Kwankwaso in 2023 and do not want to repeat it,” he stated.

The NNPP founder stressed that the party was not desperate to take power at all costs, adding that its political decisions were guided by the belief that leadership ultimately rests with God.

He said the party’s national leadership would meet soon to finalise the adoption arrangement and formally announce its decision to Nigerians.

“The one thing that is sacrosanct is that we will adopt a candidate that we believe is best for Nigeria and Nigerians,” Aniebonam said.

He added that NNPP members, maritime practitioners, shippers and other critical participants in the maritime transport and logistics sector would have a say in determining the presidential candidate the party would adopt.

Aniebonam further clarified that the party’s participation in other elective positions across the country remained non-negotiable, noting that its candidates would continue to contest in the 2027 elections.

“For now, the only position we will no longer be contesting for is the presidency. By 2031, we would have elected a presidential candidate to compete favourably with other political parties,” he added.
